(For those of you not from around here, it's a higher end grocery store). I poured 4 different wines that night, totaling about 400 samples. I can now say "Clos du Bois" correctly without hesitation.

Which side are you on?
Funny how the perspective on an activity can change when you're on the other side of the counter (or desk).....

Yesterday Eric was watching some episodes of Frasier to find a clip to show about argumentation in his Critical Thinking class. I sat beside him and watched the episode for awhile, then realized I was slacking. Funny thing is, HE was doing the same thing, but HE wasn't slacking. It was part of his work.

I guess it's the same for me...when others drink wine they are relaxing. When I do it, I'm working. I guess I could apologize over and over, or just get to it and try to write something new.

A Sample of Work

I've started working part-time for a wine distributor. My job is to pour wine samples. Yes, I get to try them too. After all, it is my job to know about the nose, palate, and finish of each one.

A Sample of what I'm reading

Oh, did you notice that I've been reading "Wine for Dummies?" It's one of the best books out there to help me do what I do. I have to admit I got overwhelmed in the chapter about French wine. It's very complicated....but I can now have an intelligent conversation about the second fermentation process of Champagne and sparkling whites: tank vs. bottle.

A Sample of traffic

I drive carpool. Yes, it's official. I'm a grown-up. Every afternoon, my phone alarm reminds me to drop what I'm doing and go get some kids. It wouldn't be such a tricky ride if the main road outside our neighborhood weren't perpetually under construction. They seem to synchronize the lane closures to the exact time that I need to pick up the kids. I've enjoyed the time with Allison, Julia, and our friend Hannah. We have "Joke-day Fridays" where we tell knock-knock jokes for the ride home. (Don't spill my strategy on being joketastic: I print out knock knock jokes from websites and keep them stashed in the glove box to refer to before the kids get in the car on Fridays).

A Heap of Wedding

My cousin Shawn is getting married this weekend. On Halloween. His fiancee', Kara asked our girls to be in the wedding. And she asked me to be one of her bridesmaids. And she asked me to ask my husband if he wouldn't mind being a groomsman for my cousin. She has the whole Cherry-Silverman clan in her wedding, each of whom will be fabulously dressed. Allison's gown is my fave: it has a train and a bustle.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXM48YdwUtFrsrsld9JbuI4OMzvZwF7PGA-SY-HuSqXA4PaG6a6La1s_DFhwxybZNLu4BYbYEgtSoFG9gBPmnVEHgURzFaQLFKv08AlPzQQLCtHI4JkEJvOBy_WByLHokWfPVu0XHFzg/s320/October+2009+049.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397465693315377426" />

I visited Baltimore (the location of the wedding) a few weeks ago to do the bachelorette party/bridal shower tour. We went to the MD Renaissance Festival as part of the bachelorette party. (see here for another post on the MD Renaissance Festival)

As you might have guessed, I was in charge of games for the bridal shower. Since the wedding is in the fall, and on Halloween, and because the bride-to-be isn't a "toilet-paper-wedding-dress-game" kinda girl, I decided to have a pumpkin carving contest. You can see the fabulous pumpkin brides below. My mom's team won. (Pumpkin on the right) Bridalicious!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZh3LRG1R3IPvw966iE0nbr2gTAik0IUUUYBnR4rQg4dQ4ROcP2s_Auq5gnqxfKkbAn3lI4xEk2LffT1RMzXd2hbF2lLKezZu-H2H4RjQmjzDRshyphenhyphenCZhTXPaj5z3tGYPrqrHYmB3PSZg/s320/October+2009+321.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397466707770871698" />KC Silvermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10497828450573636147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638308044997687.post-31072018256519462042009-07-12T20:09:00.002-04:002009-07-12T20:24:56.112-04:00My mouth is like the attic....<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieHq03_iK6pY0i5kxA-b00CbBu9EazMVaBgS3r9GaXJAbt23lSYxzjCnnfxZ3JEz6949Sd4MkKJfSWPf7zQsfxsyXnSBcN6qOA-ndBQjZVMJT3hr6CciT8cFIRcbL9ZtLyBQGIJQ6krw/s320/c8ccb2a4fd15.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357733883042163778" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-BGuHtGe6ilIyks9cZc18Sbnp4kDX-BwqOwPfYezmxIZBEd_j3imD9il52vTOIwlpm_jMe3DYn4vpgLRfm7xFRHAGUdRJGV_IqNL1PZcktlLTHNAItXCjqj_P8bD7ln_fsbNR0LubCw/s320/ae91fe393296.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357733880658541954" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuIna_CArOUnLS_kJVRy7nZKF3K6V_AVjVqsAM6lfNY8ZR7oANtNYcwiUj8c2EgRyAxWxLveQOqAH7vMECZvPzJnVpRJnoy1PICWh4e_YK6NOvo5oSRimi72h8LYTDz-aEKWJ2zVT_vA/s320/a1ac37d7edef.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357733873740353682" />

Julia was eating a snack of fruit Cheerios before bed and said "My mouth is like the attic" Perplexed, I asked her to explain.

"My tongue is the stairs (we have pull-down attic stairs)
The Cheerio is like the box
My mouth is the attic."

I think perhaps we have put too many boxes in the attic. I'm writing another post. I've been negelecting my blog, but this neglect is a sign that I've been ignoring the computer more and my kids less. So it's positive, even if my reader(s) have suffered. I made certain "rules" for myself about what my next post needed to be and since I never got to it, I've been ignoring my blog. Well, no more. I'm inserting a space between the last post and today. During our engagement, just 2 months before the wedding we had been planning, (and on my 24th birthday) Eric was told that he may have cancer. He had been having some back pain, and thought it may be a pulled muscle so he went to the doctor. The doctor found some enlarged lymph nodes on his neck and told him it might be lymphoma, a type of cancer.

After surgery for a biopsy, it was confirmed. Eric had cancer.

We decided to get legally married so that I would be Eric's "next of kin" (for medical/legal purposes) and so that he could be covered under my health insurance.

On Monday, March 23, 1998 Eric called the courthouse to find out when we could go to be married. At the time, I was working until about 3:30 every afternoon. We figured the courthouse would be open until 5 and I could meet him there after work. Eric discovered that they only performed weddings until 3:30 so I had to go ask my boss if I could leave work a little early. The conversation went something like this:

Me: I was wondering if I could leave a little early today.

Boss: Sure, what's going on?

Me: I'm going to get married this afternoon and they close at 3:30.

Boss: {Shrieking} You're getting married! You need to leave now (it was 10am). You'll have to get your nails done, you hair done....Will you need the next few days off for a honeymoon?

Me: No, it's just a legal ceremony. It doesn't "count" as our wedding. It's a legal document.

Boss: {puzzled} Ok, go when you need to.

(Did I mention I had a great boss? Thanks, Nina!)

So I met Eric at the courthouse that afternoon. We were ushered into a room made just for weddings. It had AstroTurf on the floor, mirrors on the wall, a park bench, a white trellis with fake flowers, and I think a cherub shaped statue or fountain. Yes,it was cheesy.

We hadn't invited anyone to attend, since this wasn't our "real" wedding. Our friend, Mary, was a school teacher and was home by that time in the afternoon. We must have left a message saying we were getting married, and she called to ask if she could come. She brought daffodils from her yard and I used them as my bouquet. I wore the flower crown I had gotten from our trip to the Renaissance Festival (read about this here).

I also wore a black shirt and blue jeans. On my wedding day. (Eric wore the shirt in the picture yesterday...yes he still has it and it's in the "normal" rotation. Mine's long gone.)

The court clerk said we were the most in love couple she'd seen.

Afterward, we wanted to celebrate by going to eat in Downtown Baltimore in a restaurant at the top of a tall building but when we got there, we discovered the restaurant was closed. Only on Monday.

So....we went to TGIFriday's instead. I had the "Steak On a Stick Platter". I don't remember what Eric ordered. For almost all of the past 11 years, we have celebrated this anniversary by going to TGIFriday's (in MD, TX, MO, and now we need to add VA) and I always get a Steak On a Stick Platter. It's the pineapple that makes it.

Stay tuned for Silverman Wedding Anniversary #2 and #3. I'm in Nags Head, North Carolina which is south of Kitty Hawk, north of Cape Hattaras. I'm here for a scrapbooking weekend with 14 other women in a big beach house that even has an elevator. I enjoyed some seafood last night at the Black Pelican, and this morning I woke up to a beautiful sunrise. I took a stroll on the beach early this morning and saw only one person out for a walk, and one truck driving on the beach (this was a little weird to me). I found some shells, including a really cool spider crab shell.<img style="float:left; (thanks, Wendy) I have to admit I thought her idea of building a sandcastle in February sounded too cold to bear, but when the temperature reached 80 degrees today, I couldn't keep away from the beach. We didn't really build a castle, but we searched for shells, played with sand and did it all smack in the dead of winter. My favorite gift she received was a clock with an engraving "your tenure clock is no longer ticking, but your lectures are timeless".

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQPzDpGxHndsuEbypFrQ6PLXHX4nDrgeEbIo3toFLd7DrhCrojOk5-9_ImhQeRq-4sUZIsjKH4G6TIGt3AbzP8b2yLjqd33ESDNrJqKcw3Pvr4x5mAcIcV0y7aFdwdkv0uHJYOh4sUyA/s320/winterthru+Feb+09+048.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300587337910845346" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-HD49jsxphSmkrYAy5xIok_Wlm1oGtBA-yZTvtvbK8wcExquFHzLxGTJ647sj2TUaa0fe8ow3rb4aGuw3Hs3qRDHJVfIkBS0EwkbhNTYDrvCol1TS3whV1bZcew5soKbEhB0eRRYATQ/s320/winterthru+Feb+09+047.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300587337495712434" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBI9yt5Wn8GPJp1uOC7uEQSyn9IMpHgNv6wq6lacS8lANVqkwCKVVknh9EMifv1MFfGauLrIVkclL1re3wXYz2ECSBtLScV0vsLzCQRg4dSyGH-_j9SaVDrR1ja88yXS6P0zZobcmRtw/s320/winterthru+Feb+09+054.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300587331878120130" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSRG533163YUbJ32HdJKHrpg0qDinJ-GE1XMtDNS9ur6Ud-p0xITM4A6lpvxuLNYJaB32t_yLoZeSSfwiPggN-gtQZWy_n0oW_kci3rpj2YnlFdDmjf7mKGOBDcd3vJlLPE_PDgjMFmw/s320/winterthru+Feb+09+050.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300587329476643266" />KC Silvermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10497828450573636147noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638308044997687.post-42733155366802628932009-02-04T20:18:00.007-05:002009-02-04T21:09:23.432-05:00Wacky Countdown Day #3Ok friends, you may remember my plan to celebrate the 35 days leading up to my 35th Birthday by doing something celebratory, wacky, or plain fun each day. I've been soliciting ideas from my friends on how I might celebrate. Read more about this here.

So how's the plan going?

Day 1 (Groundhog's Day): Seriously considered going to Punxsutawney Pennsylvania to see the official Groundhog "Punxsutawney Phil" prognosticate. Consulted the Official Punxsutawney Phil website the day before where it states "the viewing area gates open at 3:00am. Young children not recommended." Ruled that out. Spent the afternoon without kids, (mostly doing errands). Better luck tomorrow.

Day 2: Woke up at 5:00am (not by choice) but got to catch up with an old camp friend via Facebook chat for almost 2 hours before anyone woke up. Not planned fun, but so good for my soul. (Click on the 1993 camp staff picture below: I'm in the middle row, far left. Yes, that's me. I WAS that fabulous back then. People called me Chief.)
Considered donating 10 inches of my hair to "Locks of Love" (I did it once before) but got the girls haircuts instead. Perhaps I'm not up for anything daring after all.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 257px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2uB5m8NaCNaqzf1vHKGVJE5vjOCmHVmHA-utwzAXYfLYpOTH_YbFLCE2xOWDhbh5S1lkVxj-im34wg0DLy5ov8oxBprotQbjcCHpxunz_zfAEKXP2W_ltfDAIl5XSp_0oEXt2CSd6dw/s320/Staff1993.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299126749947742034" />

Day 3: (today) Tried to tap into my inner superhero while visiting the Virginia Living Museum (see pic). Will you celebrate with me from afar?

I want to try to do something new, quirky, wacky, or celebratory for the 35 days leading up to my birthday. That's where you come in....

Send me your ideas on how I might celebrate for a day, keeping in mind that I want it to be attainable (not skydiving) in an everyday schedule. I will post pics or stories as I partake in each of your brilliant schemes.

If you don't already know this about our family, I'll tell you this:

"We're the Silvermans. We celebrate everything more than once." Hence the 35 days of planned birthday merriment.

Help me celebrate by adding to my list!

How do I feel about turning 35?

I didn't think this age thing would phase me, but I think because so much transition has happenened in my life in the last year I find myself.....phased. I'm struggling even to describe how it's affecting me. I don't want to make it sound all negative. I just find myself noticing the number, and not sure what it means. Am I too old to start something new? Am I too young to have made something of myself? Will I EVER be a responsible grownup?KC Silvermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10497828450573636147noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638308044997687.post-18483510398476472412009-01-29T03:33:00.003-05:002009-01-29T04:33:02.309-05:00It's 3 am....againI find myself awake at 3:00am pretty often. It's been like that on and off since my 2nd pregnancy. Probably once every week or so, I'm not sleeping when I should be. Either I had too much caffeine, or woke up from one of the kids' crying (woke up, not GOT UP, Eric does that) and can't get back to sleep. I get my red blanky, with the fuzzy side towards me, and sit on my red couch and power up the computer.

It's one of the only times I keep up on the blogs I read, and find friends on Facebook. You know, important stuff.

I think I'm actually pretty witty and delightful at 3am. I write e-mails full of warm and fond memories to old highschool friends and camp buds. Most of my blog posts have been written in the 3am hour. Perhaps it's just the lack of sleep talking.

So, why am I such a mess between 4 and 6pm? (For those of you who don't know...this is a rhetorical question. Please don't tell me that if I hadn't been awake at 3am, I might be more sane in the afternoon. I don't want to hear your logic.)

I dread the afternoon because I'm not a likable person then. I don't even respect me as a mommy between 4 and 6pm.

Where's Supermom then?

Where are the spontaneous games I'm supposed to play to keep the kids off the TV?

How about all those songs with funny motions that I know and teach to other people's kids?

Where is that huge pile of new toys the kids got for Christmas?

Nowhere. Nowhere. Nowhere. It's just Meanmommy, exasperated for the millionth time wondering "What the HECK am I supposed to make for dinner?" I look in the cabinet. I see boxes of food, but I can't visualize dinner. I can't decide.

It's 3am but I'm still stuck at 5:00pm. Am I insane? I keep doing the same thing, expecting different results.

But change is hard. Change requires that, in a moment of intense weakness, I make a willful, strong, decisive, positive action.
Change requires me to go back to bed and try to fall asleep even though this is the most peace and quiet I've had in 2 weeks.

Change requires me to forgo the sweet tea (with caffeine) in the afternoon, or skip the chocolate ice cream (again with the caffeine) before bed.

Change requires me to think ahead, plan a week of meals and then (this is the hardest part) to execute the plan I made.

Stephen Covey describes it as "exercising integrity in the moment of decision" Wow do I fall short. Do I have Integrity? Can I make a Decision? Do I have to talk about Exercise? Ugh. Stephen, how do you make it look so easy?

Change requires that I admit I'm wrong. It requires me to step beyond the tantrum of "Idon'twanna" and be a grownup. It requires me to go back to bed.KC Silvermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10497828450573636147noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638308044997687.post-1830763272532816782009-01-06T22:20:00.003-05:002009-01-06T23:02:48.875-05:00A Recipe I Don't Recommend<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 176px; height: 144px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeOIOkDLUrJ_MsboCAq7BKJWke9kHSkKLcT4tH67X9BxQ45046T7EDStu5u_YV_g6UuiPQekUdpzvMIx1SVP9ani5t38yQBdL80GCfLVSTDM_ofTiJHj_aTtnh4URvwnDG89sLUMJgaw/s320/burnt+chicken.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5288396421333863586" />
Ingredients:
Enough chicken for 3 meals
short attention span

Step 1: get the idea whilst cooking dinner that you'll cook a completely different set of chicken to be used later in the week.

Step 2: get distracted, eat the "other" dinner for the evening, leave the house to go to Bible Study and return at 9:30pm

Step 3: Eat Crow. One thing that helps is being able to hear your husband instruct your children during bedtime prayers to thank God that the house didn't burn down.

I thought about keeping this recipe a "family secret" but thought about all the people who would derive so much enjoyment from it and decided to share.KC Silvermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10497828450573636147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638308044997687.post-49266637346224549802008-12-28T14:00:00.009-05:002008-12-28T15:22:09.856-05:00..then we held hands & sang "Kum Ba Yah"I went to church today with my parents in rural PA.

The pastor of the church spoke of how secular versions of the Christmas Spirit are already packed away for next year. But the true work of Christmas begins after the hub-bub goes away and the reality of God's love takes hold in each of us. God's Spirit stirs us to serve and love one another all year long. Where, instead of just sending Christmas cards, we send notes to one another all year to communicate how much we care. Instead of giving Christmas gifts, we give to one another all year out of the abundance we have received through God's generosity. People don't stop needing us to reach out to them just because Christmas has passed. The year 2008 is essentially over. We stand at the threshold of next year...how will we spend it, how will we celebrate it, how will we join God in telling others that he loves them each dearly?

After the church service, we all went downstairs to the church basement to have a New Year's Party. We got to be the first in York County (or anywhere for that matter) to do a countdown, with hats, noisemakers and all.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 146px; height: 115px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD0Z8dotCjtRcjYvzPUD7cOFn2y5JqLf_8ikBqeSATI4OvFB0r32u04I7xGFu0sF6oj_Zi0vvIJ1GQ_YeTCTCKJH9RtGBh_dIo1fxrEcTinPprfsg3bUiLKAj1m0ZVvsX3qnFh4AHTiw/s320/38af0d7d9c58.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5284928465969969410" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 176px; height: 144px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSKNYmHFPb8p4v83vqRfaXAyo8wToJgi_zlGdmE2yr0ODLoHO67X_dv6gFqKWTMc-e67mMeK31c7Yd0IDoUAHYs0-xfVMgbrFn6iQRNXez_eWvFJr0h5AOHQuyPO3mKcWUfAIS3LXWvA/s320/41a4fc94cdaf.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5284929992385960258" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 112px; height: 143px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxv53xDE0NKyFutgWiC7Yvt_xz4UVRGSKMcC9LO-9iAE8uymq6L1rX-k0WaUYOR21fU8EWbEweLHXRjc62C7XJzmODnceQoCYCONV1-3LdSpSACRxNW7nHAj2DgjqnykHGrG-LdA3XXw/s320/505e582557ee.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5284929877719523618" />

As a local-ish tradition (it's actually a Baltimorean tradition) we all ate pickled Herring. It's kinda like German sushi on a toothpick. It was salty and vinegar-y, as I expected, but it had an unexpected sweetness to it.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 176px; height: 144px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8wjjCkNWRIFU0CYgK0JiED4AWdguliowrw0Vt-HiPdu7f7FZpi-5iQgdxSH8J2Y3NydyU_jCIyVIqX9CaaF8sWqVBcKfnLjspd6dQRLSGq72kh1weKaFHhJJi8MPVRb-cKLmHixVBsg/s320/a6acd571ad51.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5284929322145459570" />

Just so no one could get out of taking a taste, Pastor Henry had everyone stand in a circle and pass the plate of herring around. (the first few times I felt a shock I wasn't sure if I was imagining things, but today, I got a shock off the edge of my microwave.)

I knew there were some....funky.... things about a few of the plugs around the house, and we needed to install ground fault protection in the ones near water sources. But...

Today I learned that I had 120 volts of electricity soaring through me every time I: touched the kitchen sink, the microwave, the garbage disposal, and the stove. A little bit more can stop your heart.

Can I be excused from all kitchen-related housework now since its hazardous to my health?

Luckily the helpful electrician made some modifications to keep me safe short term. Now I can wash all the dishes I want (do I have to say Hooray?). We turned off all the electricity to that part of the kitchen. That means my microwave is plugged into a heavy duty extension cord, and I have no light over the kitchen sink. But I'm alive and well, ready to tackle another chore.KC Silvermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10497828450573636147noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638308044997687.post-74850925526532290012008-12-03T22:36:00.004-05:002008-12-03T22:53:44.485-05:00First Place - It's the "tooth"!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFYD5a45IC-vAEog6p7cbpKMjAKrY3o9tCEqf8TPFA-CKwQv-ZOrM9cNPW48tdqebfXiG4vpoaU0zvKG6RQYEr0amD04BpCCW-IY3jWDYlOmE-2VKZamGiTZokbNudyG3L3YdEZUPVcg/s320/Science+Fair+Dec+08+003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275774363890739954" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_FLG2j3-VBT2gJYaFl_698n4gyruUhgU-eeeKSDwhbOO5jGc553YC5HijdLB6aYX-Q0BOahRwx_ULEqDlujpVKqXmlwY6mOQqO3QnCpORuRwSOaJx5ApzZ6R3nFYCfiDyOgYygQ4zag/s320/Science+Fair+Dec+08+005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275774355688888786" />

Allison entered the Project Fair at the Homeschool Co-op and won 1st Prize!

Her project, titled "The 'Tooth' About Drink Stains" was about how different drinks stain the teeth. I started school a month early so I could take time off when we moved. Still, we've needed to return to our school routine recently. I couldn't find all our school stuff (it already takes up more than one box) so we didn't have a flag to say the pledge.

That's ok. Homeschool Mom will save the Day!

I just found a moving box with a flag printed on the side.
We said the pledge to a box.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAusiBbuhdAjBetp6mH2mEk2JFpFQkG9_sx_QrnewgnOzY9WBoYUV7nmbtAr6SP6BQZF3wrgTDOfPXX1x2Dg-Iyr9pVAdN2ssDekA72TTPZ-c6Pv0z0Xj0zEsqDBv1fyAE1IfKL1uEyQ/s320/oct2008+103.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5272762007664911250" />

In my head, my pledge went something like this:

"I pledge allegience to the flag
on the United Van Lines box,
and to the housefull of boxes in which it stands.
One family, under boxes, unpackable, with bubble wrap and tissue paper for all"

That being said, we've made some great strides in school recently, with the addition of a new math curriculum. Here you see the blocks that we used today to learn place value (ones, tens, hundreds). Julia plays too when we play "Math blocks" Before we know it, she'll be learning about the ones, tens and hundreds who live on decimal street.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7GXtRXx4t-MFXTRIiJL-71EhXiJiSxK1Ov2rNlqoE8c5A0xaRb_3F9zaHFTumnkF5wAt-so4Dpx76AuYrsy7HNJhU5X-gBFsOKm4_CUjy1beiak1BrPvlITMJ8YAXXwshXo6SYlqXUQ/s320/oct2008+083.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5272770877702202786" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGqyIWUtcue6vm7W5BCH18j-yxcGbRt183J0223huzGIDYIbYUG3XSWZXjNtUVFGHKk6c_ONgbaY2NXPffvS5IunpW4PszxNTupq2Ybvg4r4aXvC20uz00ZYI9lq4dSTvcIHasCA3-XQ/s320/oct2008+084.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5272770873278803602" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFYlySEFRWndOOEzRIYZh0h5qiY6iCcfpNlYso8wMzqZBkNriZl1W3CF0_ZaRcfom3PkShqxhltceMvAhTO3WMHB8hoXDI0aSrnKzeCk9PBbH3T73Do3o_j48o2RXH0WIt2dVrIKW2Tg/s320/oct2008+086.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5272770869119904306" />KC Silvermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10497828450573636147noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638308044997687.post-14618235203828413962008-10-30T04:30:00.009-04:002008-10-30T05:44:59.031-04:00The (Silverman) History of the Renaissance FestivalLong before we ever considered dating, Eric had invited a group of friends (including me) to go the the Maryland Renaissance Festival on a particular Saturday. Sounded interesting to me, I'd never been so I said I would go.

Turns out, I was the only one who said yes.

Several friends had other plans, or just didn't want to go for whatever reason, so it just ended up being the two of us. This wasn't so weird to us, we were good friends. We hung out regularly at "the guys" apartment. No biggie. Hangin out with my pal, my bro, my bud Eric. Off to the Renaissance Festival.

The Maryland Renaissance Festival is in Crownsville, Maryland. It's about an hour drive (which we did together) from Baltimore.

Soon after we arrived, we strolled past a vendor selling flower crowns. We stopped to browse, and Eric pointed to the crowns saying "I think either this one or that one would look beautiful on you".

I was surprised by his use of the word BEAUTIFUL in a sentence concerning me. After all, I was just "one of the guys". He offered to buy it for me but that was more of a gesture than I was willing to accept at the time....this NEW time.

So, faster than a wink I whipped out my cash a bought the flower crown that would look BEAUTIFUL on me.

When I got home, I told my roommate, Wendy "I think I like him, like him."

We started dating about a month later.

The following year, we were quite serious in our dating relationship. Eric suggested we go the RenFest. Fun times. I said yes.

All my over-zealous co-workers had me convinced <frightened> that he was going to propose to me there. I knew we'd eventually get engaged, but I wasn't ready yet. I have to get used to an idea for awhile before I commit.

So our whole visit the the RenFest I was a little....nervous. Is he going to do it now? How about now? I kept thinking he was going to propose. Finally I started to get annoyed that he wasn't doing it. This was the perfect place to propose, wasn't it? Perhaps that was his strategy.

We got engaged about a month later.

Several months later, during our first wedding, I wore the flower crown he had picked out for me.

Fast forward 10 years to present day. We took our two girls to visit the Maryland Renaissance Festival with some friends. Here are the pics.

<img style="float:left; I knew intellectually that the easternmost side was ocean, but it never occurred to me that there would be a BEACH there. Duh.

I just kept thinking I had to drive an hour south to Virginia beach to see waves and sand. It is true that if I want the whole beach, boardwalk, t-shirt shop experience, VABeach is the way to go.

But just 15 minutes away is Buckroe Beach, with a wonderful playground on the sand and lots of waves. We visted there recently with Eric's Dad and Roberta. There was a rough storm a day or so before we visited, so there were some larger items washed up on the beach. Allison found a red seasponge (or maybe it's coral), a horseshoe crab shell, and lots of large seashells. Julia did her usual...she picked up fistfulls of sand and dumped it in the water over and over.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidfpoUsfmq4imRDKeCoZl5p85ZNYwCP82JaN2bW3Z2NEa1JAKamFy4jVWm80HPm3-WcjaC4heE8i4iXy5uH3Jhs9O5n42OR2IJA2BKlYLjypBkjBc7cGes7qnqOxUe0_fx_8GbbTsJLQ/s320/1st+day+school+and+beach+08+003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252953600678190226" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOGHFnAwzgnZJgv3rRTRIgEkulL_WzmzWykgqxLkIhTiahPEGiU3n7V-v6FVFxS4tKK3cuZuXgRZLO2muZl9eyYhwpVaGWcvxHiWLgJop1JTX7G4QDknSNxGcuIRchlkEEqcH88KUYWQ/s320/1st+day+school+and+beach+08+001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252953607272254338" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjNBrj0iohln0fYRDM2VudcwEyl4I6B-YRV-42yg42FZqjE34NuV7bqqcL-II1280-EWrOfH5E21geVPqMVvHapxHpAsxnkKKJIE7uoHpbAQqff-EWiD6VqvYhEIIezXHi2Y7uozphNg/s320/1st+day+school+and+beach+08+007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252953611936305794" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJwjpZyD4PZSZTVCsptA92fdf_ib5pKgx-7MGDZQ4TryHSVz7HX5UBcYMv8hVvbSB0H-acyVHxmAylXu5ANTNQSoLyr6wAto_QQHvtWbmu1bn5jCoyNXLoazuYM7V6a2aIYtUnRokuxA/s320/1st+day+school+and+beach+08+018.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252953619088651586" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHEX1p0-N_zFSiUsTpevxdIQHLPxaMFylKU8sLdEHw3tf0njXCCqPVZBv_X7o6JL_LRitHQEFI9ntVPZqFIpzqekk-kwkPm_ZbjOX7rjTnY8yUp3eywRmmOhzoe5mqhH2sAm6-JPE0uw/s320/1st+day+school+and+beach+08+024.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252953627295958290" />KC Silvermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10497828450573636147noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638308044997687.post-48749112755193121962008-10-03T10:55:00.006-04:002008-10-03T11:33:51.238-04:00Recent picsHere are some pics of Allison on her first day of Kindergarten at the co-op. I had to pry layers of tootsie roll from her teeth until I could see any white. After today, we should probably get her a new toothbrush.

In spite of all the new toys, the girls are presently outside playing with a broom and a stick. In their defense, they ARE using one of the new hair loops to decorate the broom. After all, it is a horse, I guess it needs a ponytail.KC Silvermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10497828450573636147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638308044997687.post-44332696405391152292008-09-15T04:28:00.002-04:002008-09-15T04:40:39.492-04:00Our new house...Here are just a couple pics of our new house (still with the current owner's stuff). We just had our inspection on Friday, and our closing date is less than 2 weeks. We will move in mid October, as the current owners need a little time to vacate. Once we get moved in, I 'll put more pics up.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgnLhubiC8o1L6xdd0I1VAlCt6qTLxyfJWKJjU2asZXQ_NoHruUw1VetSC1QLc292ZWsySHChuCAY88A9C5yTX2QFsLE1xNf0zzSXWh-CK2CWVCM2_PfWIhVrNajSMqiG68IBuBa-nCg/s400/new+house+068.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246164182604699586" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO8bCPX-YBQmKHvi5Wr_9X8mY3FXQcOzo8oo7QW3QqX9mbs366V8r81vXrp49qdLPT9kE8d8w6Cw1HGcSzI6O_BNVMgNmtJ0zYwELZy2cLneFEUwmcXur08qDo0adhXPjcqqIlQmXhDw/s400/new+house+043.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246164185824756322" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpTdEbyYBlSzwr7VCydXtUeXqOgSsyWoJoRIgPSqr_uHc-czthwb_wOSubPuNHFoI0cCPKtrDJRTQJkfPksrKmSwgJKBbFsR3-gKmZqPTBwBrNSH4YizNdETRlXae3JiPa9pPgwlc8nw/s400/new+house+056.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246164190117619330" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOLWQdONDfTGza244jYTKSxjheivIUZslV5jMZ5ixVdhgX79V0cFI9YEvwvHgCXD-sAAFcI6IEpGTHql98i3OYApHAwJaXqCTB_4zxobuEO6pmTT_L3x0L-wgNOmj66B-S-3qXylfQ1g/s400/new+house+059.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246164195964670434" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnIX51q1ztnm1X1Bx23AKde9GiQvikt47X3EKxVkcvQ1GEvGocrIXmEe_63CNCY1sBxixlBS6T83Hk7wy3K_7nwes8mqOYMFrkTAtUxgDqCnLAGoOHfUNXst9zJmb0VJQ1IjW8HJFRtQ/s400/new+house+067.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246164200548977602" />KC Silvermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10497828450573636147noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638308044997687.post-38590800650129567992008-09-11T14:34:00.002-04:002008-09-11T14:52:51.365-04:00Today I learned in school....We've been doing homeschool for almost a month now, so it was bound to happen...our first meltdown day. Surprisingly, though, the meltdown was mine.

Allison has been learning about money and I was putting various coins down, asking their name and worth. She couldn't remember over and over and I got more and more insistent. I just kept answering for her and finally she said "Mom, you're talking like you're mad at me or something." I AM MAD, I thought, I just said this is a penny a second ago and you can't remember it!

I proposed we set the timer for a 15 minute break.

I retreated for some "space" in my room. Allison found me and said "Mom, you're not SCHOOL. You're my MOM. I said we should take a break from SCHOOL, not from YOU. I don't ever want to take a break from you". (yes, she is only 5) Then she brought me a plate of carrots and watermelon.

After that, we decided to move our school attempt to Starbucks. Every brain works better with a grande mocha frappachino or some organic chocolate milk in a box. We had a fabulous school day at Starbucks, including learning about a bank vault. The Starbucks used to be a bank, and they left the vault door and turned the vault into a quiet nook for hanging out. I counted it as an extension of our lesson on money. They just kept spinning the vault handle and pretending they were steering a boat.

Today I learned in school that my daughter doesn't see me as just her teacher. I'm her MOM.KC Silvermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10497828450573636147noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638308044997687.post-54469645015975259842008-08-29T21:23:00.002-04:002008-08-29T21:46:09.960-04:00Tourist in my new homeTuesday we saw Virginia Beach, Wednesday was the "Virginia Living Museum" and Thursday we jetted off to the "Air and Space Museum". I'm officially a tourist in my own new town.

Virginia Beach was traditional beachy fun (see earlier post). The Virginia Living Museum offered a mix of natural earth science and mini zoo. Everything there is native to my new home, Virginia. We pet spider crabs, horseshoe crabs, and saw all the native waterfoul, fish, snakes, etc.

The Air and Space Museum (see my profile photo)had every kind of flying machine, including a large Delta plane where Allison spent most of our time. We (my parents and I) sat in the first class seats, buckled in and listened to Allison talk into the mic as a flight attendant. My favorite moment is when she stormed into the cockpit and exclaimed "Excuse me, could you please fly to Paris because that's where everyone wants to go"

We also took in an IMAX version of the 3-d "Fly Me to the Moon", an adaptation of the apollo flight where 3 houseflies accompany the flight crew to the moon. I have told Allison the story about Neil Armstrong and the trip he took to the moon so it was neat for her to get to see the story in a movie. When the movie finished, we passed by the space capsule in the museum and talked about how it was the same kind as in the movie, and my dad reminisced about staying up until 4:00am that day to watch the moon walk live on tv. When we got home, Eric asked Allison what she had learned at the museum. "Nothing really" was her response. Dang. I guess I can't count that as a homeschool fieldtrip day.

Phase II of the "Grandparent Parade" has finished. (Phase I - Eric's mom here last weekend, Phase II - my parents here during the week, Phase III - Eric's dad coming this weekend). It's 9 straight days of people we love, and so far its going well. I don't know what else there is to see in town, but I imagine my tourist week isn't finished until the last grandparent leaves.KC Silvermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10497828450573636147noreply@blogger.com0
